Clements Financial is a mortgage and protection brokerage on Eastfield Road in Peterborough. Jonathan Clements started it with his wife. There are six of us now, five of us advise, and between us we have access to most of the lender market.
Two people and a spare room's worth of ambition
Jonathan had been arranging mortgages for years before starting this. He and his wife set the business up between them, and the idea behind it was never complicated: be the broker who answers the phone, explains things properly, and tells people the truth about what is possible.
That is still the whole proposition. We have grown to six people on Eastfield Road, but nobody here has a script and nobody is chasing a product target. Jonathan has never stopped running his own cases and has no intention of starting now.
Six of us, five of whom advise
Five advisers means there is almost always somebody free to talk. You will not be handed to a call centre, and you will not have to explain your situation twice to three different people.
Megan runs the branding and marketing side so the rest of us can get on with the cases. Everybody else is advising, packaging applications and chasing lenders.
Mostly mortgages, and the cover that goes with them
Most of what we do is residential. First-time buyers, people moving up, remortgages for anyone coming off a fixed rate, landlords with one property or with fifteen, and a good number of self-employed clients whose accounts another broker could not be bothered to read properly. We are moving into commercial lending as well.
Alongside that we advise on protection: life cover, critical illness, income protection and the business equivalents. We will tell you where you already have enough through work, which is not something everybody in this trade does.
Criteria first, rate second
We have access to most of the lender market. For a lot of people criteria matter more than rate, so we establish who will actually lend to you before worrying about who is cheapest. A market-leading rate you do not qualify for is not a market-leading rate.
If somebody else has already told you no, that is usually worth a conversation. Lenders differ enormously in how they read income, credit history and accounts, and a decline from one says very little about the other several hundred.

Ring the office in working hours and you will get one of us. If we are all on calls, we ring you back the same day.
We tell you if we cannot help
Some cases do not work, and some people already have what they need. We would rather say so than waste your afternoon.
We are clear about fees
Where a fee applies you will know the exact amount, in writing, before you commit to anything.
One adviser, start to finish
You will not be handed round the office. Whoever takes your first call sees the case through to completion, and you will have their direct number.

- Where are you based? 381 Eastfield Road, Peterborough, PE1 4RA. There is an office you can walk into, Monday to Friday, nine until five.
- Do you charge a fee? On most cases we are paid by the lender. Where a fee does apply, you will be told the exact amount before you commit to anything, and it is confirmed in writing.
- Do I have to come to the office? No. Plenty of our clients do everything by phone and email. The kettle is there if you would rather talk it through in person.
- Are you tied to particular lenders? No. We have access to most of the lender market and we search across it rather than working from a short panel. If a lender is not available to us, we will say so.
- What if another broker has already declined me? Come and talk to us. Lenders read income, credit history and accounts very differently, and one decline tells you almost nothing about the rest of the market.
